Wow... Hi, Slashdot!
Just came across a story on Slashdot mentioning our little fork here and I for one would just like to welcome our new server-crashing overlords. Sorry, I couldn't resist that one.
On to more serious business, I just want to address a couple questions I saw in the comments as I quickly browsed through them. (read further...)
#1, is in regards to whether or not we are going to split into an entirely new codebase, and the answer, for now at least, is no. We believe that Pidgin is for the most part, an excellent client that has a few (mostly) easily fixed annoyances. So for now we will just be extending and modifying current Pidgin versions and including some in-demand plugins.
That brings me to #2, yes, we will be staying up to date with Pidgin as best we can, but you'll have to forgive us if we lag behind by a few days on releases.
#3, we are aware some of our packages may be broken. Right now we're a very small, loosely-organized team whose founding members (myself, and Connor) have very little experience in the world of software development. We're still trying to find our feet and enlist some more skilled help (we're very much open to new recruits *hint*), so please bear with us. If you're having trouble installing a package on your distro, your best bet is to just compile the code from source. While you're at it, grab the latest SVN code and help us test bleeding-edge features :)

Hey Justin,
I really admire your courage to start a fork of pidgin. However, can I be so rude as to suggest a full fork? I mean, a fork which is actually a patch to solve one small issue is okay, but the manual text box resizing isn't the only issue. Like VoIP, webcam chatting, etc etc. Plenty of issues the users didn't agree on with the devs in the past.

congrats for the fork! I was using gaim.. err.. I mean, pidgin :) since long ago, and was always annoyed by the lack of easily implemented features that weren't implemented because the devs didn't liked them.
As the previous comment already mentioned, it would be great to add such features to funpidgin - webcam support, voip, full MSN protocol support (altough it is in SVN already as I understand), and so on.
I completely agree with your decision to fork pidgin. I switched from it to other clients (mercury, emesene, gajim..) after I realised that it is pointless to expect the pidgin devs to include the new features. And I am sure that funpidgin will improve the situation!

good job guys. I was waiting for a while for this to happen. Looking forward to see a complete support of all the protocols which funpidjin claims it supports, not only aim. Make sure to look on the method the logs are stored currently. Now every time you close the session window pidgin creates the new file on a disk (???), and developers said they don't care.

I would really like to see a plugin that removes the emotic icons that MsnPlus sends ... you know those annoying animations. Can that be done or maybe it's allready supported?

I may consider starting to use funpidgin if a few things do change:
1) A better name. Funpidgin is crap, and has too many syllables XD.
2) You start working on making Funpidgin RGBA aware and more compiz friendly (I like my desktop looking beautiful!).
3) Facepoos and cowpiss should be dranked by the sea side.
4) well 3&4 were pointless so ignore them.
Meh. I can't be bothered writing properly anyways...
At the moment, the fork seems REALLY pointless to me!
This is great news. Just don't cop out after six months like most open source projects...
Here's a novel idea: roll back the UI to the last good 2.x version (some say 2.3.1, some say earlier still). Synchronize with libpurple (until such time as pidgin unbundles them) and develop the UI separately. Maybe even go for an -ng version of the UI down the road if the stars align.
There's a feature I'd like to see(and others, that's for sure :-): Styling
You can see the Adium screenshots to know what I'm talking about, I think this would be a killer feature :)
